The Practical Woodsman
Education • Travel • Preparedness
The Practical Woodsman is a way to share love of the wilderness, as well as my observations, thinking, and approach to what folks today are calling 'bushcraft' and 'survival'. The focus is on what is practical, as well as pointing out certain things being demonstrated by 'bushcrafters' today that are not practical at all.

COMMANDER’S CREED I am the engine and the watchtower. I run at 100 mph and I see every pattern, every weakness, every threat including the ones inside me. I will not flinch. I will not rationalize. I will meet the wave, stare it in the eyes, and ride it without hesitation. My body is my battleground; my mind is my map. I fuel it, feed it, protect it, and I hold it accountable to the highest standard the standard only a commander ‘n chief can uphold. No sugar, no shortcuts, no excuses. Survival is not luck. Survival is discipline. Every impulse I feel, I either master or it masters me. Every choice, every step, every breath is mine to command. I am unrelenting. I am relentless. I am alive — and I take nothing less than full possession of that life.

Bigfoot

This always cracks me up. Bigfoot was a major beloved legend in my family when I was growing up. We were both terrified of the thought of ever encountering him, while at the same time loving the idea of him.

A lot of folks ask if I have any honest-to-goodness Bigfoot encounters (rather than just some made up tall tales), and I do. I once saw him move between some trees at about a football field’s distance, below me down in a holler, one late breezy, summer afternoon, shortly after I had awakened from a nap that I had taken against a tree in the deep woods.

SUPPLEMENTAL: Hillbilly Wash Station

If you have stability problems with your Hillbilly Wash Station, you can add a simple ballast to the front. I did it by stuffing a brick inside a little spare MOLLE military pouch I had layin’ around and strapping it to the front.

The wash station works fine without it, no tipping over. But since I’m using it in my work area, I wanted just a bit more security.
