The Practical Woodsman
Education • Travel • Preparedness
The Practical Woodsman is a way to share love of the wilderness, as well as my observations, thinking, and approach to what folks today are calling 'bushcraft' and 'survival'. The focus is on what is practical, as well as pointing out certain things being demonstrated by 'bushcrafters' today that are not practical at all.

War History Teaches Practical Survival

I found this video interesting as it relates to conversations we have about the true nature of things, what is really important and what is not, and how little importance some things have depending on the needs of the moment.

For example, this guy and his fellow soldiers, while being shot at would just dump their blankets - the blankets were totally unimportant to the immediate goal of staying alive. This meant later suffering, but at least they were alive.

I think about this sort of thing all the time when seeing guys building elaborate, beautiful shelters in the woods. When you’re hungry and lost, or simply traveling through the wilderness, nobody is going to care about building an elaborate shelter. You’re only going to care about conserving energy and using energy for only things that are absolutely necessary in any given moment.

This means sleeping under a rock outcrop, or a fallen tree, or just trying to get through the night under your sweater and some leaves you scrounge ...

Episode About COTS

Hoping to have a show about cots uploaded before the weekend.

I love cots. It’s a shame most of them can’t make the trip into genuine wilderness, because they provide my favorite sleeping experience. But even the really “light” and compact ones ain’t light enough or compact enough to carry 30 miles up and down mountains when there are other, more-important things that have to be included in a pack.

Still, I love them, and I’m looking forward to showing several different types off. One in particular makes my favorites list.

Also, I was competing with the locusts (cicadas). Daggaum, one in particular was trying to drown me out tonight. Here’s a little taste to hold y’all over.

Missed Livestream, Trail Option

Please forgive me, folks. There’s just no way I can manage to fit in a livestream today. My day is just jam packed with other obligations. Life should be a little calmer for me next weekend.

In the meantime, here’s a detailed map of a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania for those who are interested. It covers the portion(from right to left) between road PA 309 to the town of Port Clinton. I reckon it’s about 30 miles or so. Beautiful in late September when I originally did it.
