Here’s the Appalachian wilderness where I grew up, that was my playground, and where my parents still live today. I used to get up very early in the morning and hike through the woods back to that pond you see in the picture, arriving just about the time the sun had risen, to fish for a few hours and then spend the last hour skipping rocks, before hiking back home through the woods in the early afternoon, starving for dinner.

Is it worth the trouble carrying one of these on a miles long foot journey through the backcountry? It depends. Sometimes it is worth the trouble, sometimes it ain’t. In my opinion so much of a question like this depends on what other luxuries you’re taking. Taking this lantern usually means foregoing some other luxury.
